Artificial lawn

Back to dictionary

Artificial turf is a synthetic covering that imitates natural grass. It consists of several layers: a substrate, a backing, and fibers that visually replicate grass blades, ranging in height from 5 to 100 mm. High-quality artificial turf is practically indistinguishable from natural grass and even surpasses it in some characteristics. But which artificial turf to choose?

Like natural grass, artificial turf can be decorative, used as a designer solution, and special, in addition to aesthetic, performing certain functions: cushioning falls, maintaining the necessary moisture level, and retaining heat.

Artificial grass can also be made from different materials: polyethylene and polypropylene. The first type is soft, practically non-slip, and does not pose a risk of injury when falling. It is used for children's and sports playgrounds. The second type made of polypropylene is more wear-resistant but also stiffer, making it better suited for areas where the chance of falling is minimal - golf courses, decorative corners, exhibition areas.

There are three main types of grass-like coverings, depending on the filling of the space between the grass fibers:

Infill artificial turf. It consists of rigid polypropylene fibers, with quartz sand and elastic rubber or rubber granules used as filler between the blades of grass. The rubber granules cushion falls, prevent injuries, and prevent the possibility of burns when slipping, so this type of turf is used for the landscaping of sports grounds with high-intensity loads. It requires regular maintenance - filling the filler several times a year and combing the pile several times a month.

Non-infill artificial turf. It consists of thin, soft, and delicate fibers, making it visually similar to natural grass, but it easily creases and loses its attractiveness. It is used for decorative purposes and is not intended for areas with constant loads and high traffic.

Semi-infill artificial turf. A covering made of polyethylene that is quite soft and elastic, with fine quartz sand as filler, which absorbs moisture well and keeps the blades in their original position. It cushions impacts well and is pleasant to the touch, so it is used for children's playgrounds, lounge areas, pool edges, but not suitable for areas with serious loads.
